True United Church and its leadership are committed to winning souls to Christ through preaching and teaching the Gospel. Our mission is to empower the believers to lead others to Christ. We are committed to inspire in all a love for Christ, and to demonstrate His Spirit through worship, witnessing, and ministering to the needs of the congregation, community, and the world.

Our History

True United Church was founded by the late Elder Frederick Garbutt. This fellowship began with a prayer group in the home of Deacon and Evangelist Crawford. In spite of the complaints from neighbors and police intrusion, the eight faithful members kept on. Several months later in December 1984, True United moved to its first location at 5701 North 13th Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In November 1987, the Lord called Elder Garbutt to his final place of rest. The Church encountered its first major dilemma, the question was asked, “who will be the next Pastor?” The dreamer was gone but the dream needed to live on. With this purpose in mind, and the request of the members, young Minister Shawn Bartley accepted the call to lead the people of God. Minister Bartley was later installed as Pastor to this congregation by the presiding prelate of the United Churches of Jesus Christ; Bishop Monroe R. Saunders, Sr.

In 1992 True United became incorporated under the Pennsylvania State, as a church and non-profit religious organization. Thus moving us from a fellowship to an established institution. In March 1997, True United acquired 528 East Haines Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until March 2011 when we acquired and moved into 6201 Old York Road, Philadelphia, PA. Anointed, structured and focused, True United continues to grow.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."
